The longstanding tradition of hosting the Annual Alumni and Friends Reunion was a resounding success in the spring of 2025. Held at the Wilson County – Tennessee State Fair fairgrounds in Lebanon, this year’s reunion brought together more than 140 attendees from all across the state. The event served as a powerful reminder of the lasting impact that the 4-H program has on its members long after they’ve moved on from their youth involvement.

The reunion was more than just a social event; it was a celebration of connection, legacy and commitment to the future of 4-H. For many alumni, this gathering is a highlight of the year – a chance to rekindle old friendships, share memories and reflect on their personal 4-H journeys. Attendees enjoyed catching up with fellow 4-H’ers, sharing stories and reconnecting with former mentors and volunteers who helped shape their lives.

More Than Memory Lane

A major highlight of the event is the opportunity for networking and the chance to give back to the current generation of 4-H members. Joe Huffine, the current president of 4-H Alumni and Friends, emphasized the significance of the reunion as more than just a walk down memory lane.

“One major benefit of meeting year after year is the networking opportunity and the ability to bring past members together to reflect on the impact that 4-H had on them,” Huffine says. Another significant benefit of the reunion is to give members an avenue to contribute to the betterment of the current 4-H program.”

This year’s reunion also stood out for its record-breaking fundraising efforts. Through a combination of silent and live auctions, attendees raised more than $8,000, marking the most successful year of event fundraising to date. These funds will go directly toward supporting various 4-H activities, helping to offset operational expenses and enhancing program offerings for youth across Tennessee.

“For the last few years, the focus has been on raising capital to help fund events related to 4-H and to raise awareness about the Alumni and Friends organization,” Huffine says. “We’re thrilled with this year’s success and grateful to all who contributed.”

Memorable Moments at Tennessee 4-H Alumni and Friends Reunion

To further raise awareness and celebrate the program’s rich history, the event also recognized past national 4-H Congress attendees. This year, special acknowledgment was given to those who participated in national Congress events during the milestone years of 1965, 1975, 1985, 1995 and 2005.

Another memorable moment during the reunion was the presentation of the 4-H Alumni Leadership Award, which honors an individual who has demonstrated exceptional dedication and service to the 4-H program. This year’s recipient was Lelan Statom, a long-time advocate and supporter of 4-H.

“Lelan has been an advocate for 4-H for more than 25 years,” Huffine says. “He has always been someone we could count on. It was great to be able to recognize him in front of so many who appreciate his contributions.”

Statom’s commitment, passion and service make him a shining example of what 4-H instills in its members – leadership, responsibility and a heart for service.

The Class of 2024 4-H’ers Under 40 were also recognized. Sixteen individuals, all under the age of 40, were honored for their ongoing contributions, leadership and commitment to the values of 4-H. Their achievements highlight the lasting impact of the program and serve as a powerful reminder of the difference 4-H alumni can make well beyond their years as youth members.

The reception also featured program updates from key stakeholders and partners, including representatives from the State 4-H Program, the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture and the Tennessee Farmers Cooperative Foundation. The 4-H Member Address was delivered by Logan West of Macon County, who currently serves as State 4-H Council All Star Chief. West’s inspiring words captured the spirit of today’s 4-H and reminded attendees of the bright future that lies ahead.
